Also, I hate to be that guy that over explains a simple post like this, but I’m excited so shush.

The reason the fish is a Christian symbol is because of the Greek word for fish, ikhthys or ἰχθύς. It’s an acronym:

• ἰ is for Iesous or “Jesus”
• χ is for Khristos or “anointed” which was used as a loan-translation for Hebrew mashiah (which had the same meaning and was used for the prophetic deliverer of the Jewish nation) from which we get messiah. Obviously, the Greek gave us Christ.
• θ is for Theou or “of God”
• ύ is for Hyios (the -h- was pronounced but not written in original Greek) or “son”
• ς is for soter or “savior”.

So, it stands for, in plain terms, Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior.
